Castillo de Alcalá
de la Selva (Alcalá
de la Selva)
The name "Alcalá" means the castle,
this is why we know that this picturesque village
was once a fortress in the times of the Muslims.
The actual look of the castle has Christian origins,
and was constructed by order of the family Fernandez
Heredia, starting the works in 1375. It has a
rectangular area, finished in keel-shape; this
kind of architecture, so rare on rocky landscapes,
proves this building to be the home of a noble
family.
It 's structure is formed by a yard and a tower
or place of residence, which is divided in 3 big
rooms, and contains three openings in its upper
part that used to be part of an aragonese gallery
similar to that of the castle of Valderrobles.
Castillo-palacio de
los Fernández de Heredia (Mora
de Rubielos)
It stands on a rocky platform above the village.
The construction fits the solid and sober style
of Mediterranean-gothic architecture, being conceived
not only for a military use, but also as a place
to live in, which combines several different elements:
some typical of military architecture (towers,
loopholes, narrow windows, machicolations, etc..)
and others of lordly and seigniorial roots, such
as the distribution of rooms, arranged around
an interior courtyard..
In spite of the lack of documentation, we can
establish a chronological order for the castle's
history, from the end of the 14th century up to
the first half of the 15th century. The castle
was occupied by the Fernandez Heredia family until
the year 1614, when it was handed over to Franciscan
monks, who lived there until Mendizabal's disentitlement
in 1835.
Embalse
de Valbona (Valbona)
It was built in 1955 over the river of the same
name. it has a total surface of 8 Ha. It is a property
of the State, and its waters are used mainly for
irrigation.
It is the ideal place for practicing water sports
and fishing; it has playgrounds for children, and
an are for relax and bath.
Ex-collegiate church
of Santa Maria (Mora
de Rubielos)
Ex-collegiate church was built thanks to the licence
awarded by the archbishop of Zaragoza Dalmau de
Mur, and under the patronage of Lord Juan Fernadez
de Heredia. From 1482 until the end of the 15th
century, important works were done thanks to the
council, which specially concentrated on the cloisters.
This construction has an ashlars shape, and its
solid look is strengthened by the thick exterior
buttresses. Its horn-shaped door, with its richly
elaborated arch and capitels is typical of the
gothic style.
The inside structure of the church has also the
gothic style of Spain's east coast, as the nave
is a large seamless surface with small chapels
in between the buttresses. This Style is a constant
at Mora, and it can be seen in all it's architecture.
It is covered by simple-cross vaults, and it has
a total of five stretches; it has three pentagonal
apses and at the foot of a series of grilles of
great artistic value sits the choir, which is
covered by a groin vault and enclosed by fence
of forged iron of the 15th century.

de Mora)
At Rubielos de Mora, one can admire, apart from
the magnificent works of Salvador Victoria, a real

the 20th century.
The Salvador Victoria museum stands on what
used to be the Gracia Hospital, in the quarter
of Campanar de Rubielos; the actual building was
constructed during the 18th century; it has been
conveniently restored to hold the museum.
The ground floor has been adapted to house the
batches of documents and a room for temporary
exhibitions. The first two rooms comprise contain
the works of Salvador Victoria and his friends.
Salvador Victoria was born in Rubielos de Mora
in 1929, and has been bind to this town during
all his life, declared in 1992 his will to bequeath
an important part of his works to his home town,
with the aim of creating a monographic museum.
After his death in 1994, his widow Marie Claire
Decay, respected Salvador's ideas, and even made
them grow by the creation of the contemporary
art museum, focused on the second half of the
20th century. This way, to the initial donation
made by Salvador, she added the paintings that

the museum were established.
Ambarina Region (subsede
Dinóplis) (Rubielos de Mora)
The medieval town of Rubielos de Mora, houses
one of the headquarters of "Territorio Dinópolis",
built upon the remains of a Konservat-Langerstätten,
a fossil lake very well conserved, one of the
few that exist nowadays. There, one can study
the different animal which got trapped in the
bottom of the lake, which then turned into fossils,
and were then covered in resin from the big trees,
and which remain nowadays inside the precious
red amber.
This fact has been used to explain to the visitants
the techniques used by palaeontologists to classify
the fossils. After seeing the excavations in "Inhospitak"
(Peñaroya de Tastavins), and watching the
restorations at Legendark (Galve), AT Ambarina
Region one can discover how do scientists analyse
the remains found, and come to the elaboration
of different theories from all the information
they have gathered.
The exposition shows amber, insects, salamanders,
leafs, and even small mammals which have now disappeared.
Palaeontology and botany are the reason to exist
of Ambarina Region, which also shows the original
remains and several replicas of a Morophus, an
already extinct mammal who used to live in the
area. Visitants can also enjoy the spaces dedicated
to leisure; it's mascot is Polillo, an audacious
insect, which we came to know conserved in an
exceptional way.
